Although based in New York, it advertises as being able to collect on a national and even international scale. Records on file at the PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records) website indicates that consumers who believed they were being harassed by BGL Credit Ltd. did not hesitate to get the courts involved.
Alleged Violations against BGL Credit Ltd.
Gary and Edith Jiminez vs. BGL Credit Ltd.*
According to PACER, on May 16, 2012 BGL Credit Ltd. sent a collection letter to Gary and Edith Jiminez demanding payment for an overdue debt “plus all legal fees and expenses”, the amount of which was not specified. When they did not pay, another letter was sent on June 25, threatening legal action if a response was not received within 10 days. No lawsuit was ever filed.
Feeling harassed by BGL Credit Ltd., Mr. and Mrs. Jiminez hired a consumer attorney and sued the company for allegedly violating the FDCPA in the following ways:
- Using false, deceptive, and misleading means to collect a debt
- Threatening legal action it did not intend to take
- Misrepresenting the character, amount, or legal status of the debt
- Harassing her by phone
