Rashaad Reed vs. TL Thompson & Associates, Inc. et al*

According to PACER, in or around early 2011, TL Thompson & Associates, Inc. started trying to collect a debt from Illinois resident Rashaad Reed. Mr. Reed later complained that he never received a validation letter and that when he answered the phone, the collectors did not always identify themselves as such and often used profane language when speaking with him. One caller allegedly said, ““We don’t do settlements and you have to pay full balance on the account. Your ass is outta (sic) gas.” There were also allegedly threats of legal action and claims that TL Thompson & Associates, Inc. could get Mr. Reed’s driver’s license suspended.

Feeling harassed by TL Thompson & Associates, Inc., he hired a consumer attorney and sued the company for allegedly violating the FDCPA in the following ways:

  • Using profane language

  • Failing to send a debt validation letter

  • Failure to identify themselves as debt collectors in all communications

  • Threatening legal actions it could not take

The matter was later dismissed.

Ellie Reed has mailed my 16yro now 17yro son letters for me and him at his grandma's house for a few months. I told her I was waiting to receive all the information I could legally get like statements from my son's car accident and the video footage from the police department along with the report. I also stated she should have been trying to contact me and not my minor son. She was nice at 1st and responded by saying she would give us time and took my phone number address and email from me. But than starting calling again and sending letters to my son again saying we owed a certain amount. I answered a call not just a couple hours ago from her where I stated we were taking it to trial and with this information she got upset and stated we HAVE to pay that amount or his license will be suspended and that since I was not at the accident I don't know what happened and that I responded neither were you but I have video footage in which she replied yeah right sure you do, and than stated again we have to pay the said amount or else! ... I said Why are you threatening me and my son ? This is extortion and she hung up.
