Alleged Violations against STA International, Inc.**

According to information on the PACER website, in or around early June 2010, a representative of STA International, Inc. began calling a Texas consumer to collect a payday loan debt. A collector who identified herself as ‘Ms. Hill’ allegedly left the consumer a voicemail telling her that a claim had been filed against her.

The representative left the last four digits of her social security number and her date of birth on the voicemail and said that she must respond through her representative attorney. The representative also left a “case number” on the recording.

Scared that criminal charges had been filed against her, the consumer called the phone number that the representative left on the voicemail. She spoke with Ms. Hill, who allegedly represented that she was with a law firm, told the consumer that she had written a “bad check,” and that she would be going to court for it.

Ms. Hill then offered the consumer what she referred to as an “out of court settlement and payment arrangement” to resolve the complaint. She discovered that no criminal or civil case had been filed against her.

Feeling harassed by STA International, Inc., the consumer sued the company for:

  • Using harassing and abusive means to collect a debt
  • Using false, deceptive, and misleading means to collect a debt
  • Using unfair and unconscionable means to collect a debt
  • Communicating false information to the credit bureaus

The matter was later dismissed.
